Name released in Glacier National Park climbing death

The B.C. Coroners Service has identified the man who died while climbing Glacier National Park's Mount Rogers on Wednesday as 52-year-old Jon Howard Sortome of 108 Mile Ranch, B.C.

Sortome had been attempting an ascent of the Mount Rogers glacier with his 22-year-old son when the pair encountered severe weather.

The B.C. Coroners Service said the two were attempting to return to their base camp, and something went wrong.

Police said Thursday that the climbers slid about 100 metres before falling another 10 metres into a crevasse, where Sortome died.

His son was injured, but was able to return to the base camp and seek help.

Parks Canada Search and Rescue recovered the body Thursday.
