A cyclist is in critical condition after he was struck by a car Sunday morning near the eastern exit of the Ville-Marie Expressway tunnel, in Montreal's Centre-Sud neighbourhood.

Police said the car was travelling at a normal speed through a green light and couldn't avoid hitting the cyclist. Witnesses told police the man had entered the intersection against the light.

The cyclist suffered head injuries and is in critical condition.

The accident took place just before 8 a.m. on Viger Street at the corner of Panet Street. Viger was temporarily closed to westbound traffic between Papineau Avenue and Panet.
