Edmonton Police Detonate Suspected Pipe Bomb Around Whyte Avenue

A large area around Whyte Avenue was blocked off Saturday night while the Edmonton police bomb squad dealt with a suspicious package.

People in the Garneau area reported hearing a large blasting noise at about 10 p.m.

The noise was from a bomb disposal robot that detonated a suspected pipe bomb that was in the in the alley behind the Safeway grocery store on 109 Street.

Police had received calls about a suspicious man at the Safeway earlier in the evening.

"The entire area was cordoned off and a nearby senior's building was also evacuated. Fortunately, no one was injured," said Dan Jones, an acting inspector for the Edmonton Police.
