A vicious home invasion on Vancouver Island was the result of attackers having the wrong address, say police.

Early Saturday morning, one of three men forced his way into a Nanaimo apartment through a window. Once inside, he repeatedly punched a 30-year-old woman in the face. Her injuries were so severe she needed surgery.

The woman’s jaw was wired shut, she lost teeth and will need to replace a plate in her jaw, said Nanaimo RCMP Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong in a news release on Monday. Police confirmed the woman was not the intended victim.

As the attacker tried to flee, the apartment’s caretaker, a 60-year-old man tried to intervene. He was kicked in the face for his efforts.

An RCMP dog handler tracked down one of the suspects, while witnesses provided information that helped in the arrest of the other two, said Armstrong.

She said police believe the suspects went to the wrong address but could not say what they were looking for.

Three men who are all 20 years old — Hudson Klassen and Cuong Lu, both from Nanaimo, and Long Tran from Vancouver — have been charged with break and enter and having their faces masked.
