Comedian Dave Chappelle met very briefly with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford on Wednesday afternoon.

The influential comedian has been in the city performing a brief run at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Isaac Ransom, a spokesman for the mayor, tweeted a photo of Ford and Chappelle together.

Global's Jackson Proskow also tweeted that Chappelle asked city bylaws would allow him to smoke on stage during his show. It was later confirmed by the Star's Daniel Dale that Chappelle actually asked the mayor's staff about the city's smoking rules.

Smoking is not permitted in most public indoor spaces in the city and celebrity visitors have gotten in trouble breaking the law before.

Actor Sean Penn got the Sutton Place Hotel fined in 2006 after lighting up during at film festival press conference.

This isn't Mayor Ford's first run-in with famous comedians. Will Ferrell And Zach Galifianakis had a brief public appearance with Ford earlier in August.

The mayor also had a more volatile encounter with comedian Mary Walsh, who showed up to Ford's home in a warrior-princess costume last October.

A note to future comedians who want to meet the mayor; don't wear a costume.
