TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,886.65 down 123.13points):

Baja Mining Corp.(TSX:BAJ). Miner. Down 3.5 cents, or 20.59 per cent, at 13.5 cents on 9,312,048 shares. A Korean consortium announced Tuesday that it invested US$90 million in Minera y Metalurgica del Boleo, a subsidiary of Baja Mining, making the consortium Boleo's largest shareholder.

Scotiabank (TSX:BNS). Bank. Down $1.30, or 2.43 per cent, at $52.30 on 5,931,225 shares. The bank announced late Wednesday that it will purchase ING Bank of Canada for $3.13 billion in cash, strengthening Scotiabank's foothold on domestic consumer banking.

Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY). Bank. Up 36 cents, or 0.66 per cent, at $54.96 on 5,408,696 shares. Canada's largest bank posted its highest quarterly profit ever and raised its dividend - for a second time this year - by five per cent. Earnings nearly doubled to $2.24 billion or $1.47 per share versus year-ago $1.29 billion or 83 cents per share while revenue increased seven per cent to $7.76 billion.

Progress Energy Resources Corp. (TSX:PRQ). Oil and gas. Down two cents, or 0.09 per cent, at $21.95 on 5,245,404 shares. The energy sector was one of the biggest decliners, closing at 250.23 points down 1.68 points or 0.94 per cent. The October crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchanged dipped 87 cents US to $94.62 per barrel.

Talison Lithium Ltd. (TSX:TLH). Miner. Unchanged at $6.47 on 5,100,197 shares. Rockwood Holdings Inc. announced last week that it will acquire the Australia-based company for $724 million.

Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX:SLF). Insurer. Up 15 cents, or 0.65 per cent, at $23.15 on 3,842,554 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,217.96 down 11.19 points):

Rodinia Oil Corp. (TSXV:ROZ). Oil and gas explorer and developer. Up 2.5 cents, or 62.50 per cent, at 6.5 cents on 7,987,930 shares.

Landdrill International Inc. (TSXV:LDI). Contract drilling services. Down 1.5 cents, or 42.86 per cent, at two cents on 4,866,762 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

CIBC (TSX:CM). Bank. Down $1.03, or 1.35 per cents, at $75.35 on 1,753,694 shares. Third-quarter net income improved 42 per cent to $841 million while revenue was up two per cent to $3.15 billion.

National Bank of Canada (TSX:NA). Bank. Down 81 cents, or 1.07 per cent, at $75.12 on 519,332 shares. The country's sixth-largest bank posted higher third-quarter net income and revenue but has kept its dividend steady despite increases by the big five banks. Net income increased by 13 per cent to $379 million while revenue was up by 11 per cent.

TD Bank (TSX:TD). Bank. Down 87 cents, or 1.07 per cent, at $80.65 on 2,285,272 shares. The country's second biggest bank boosted its dividend by seven per cent to 77 cents. It booked third-quarter profits of $1.7 billion or $1.78 per share compared with $1.49 billion or $1.58 per share. Revenue totalled $5.84 billion, up from $5.79 billion.
