A skateboarding accident in the Calgary community of Millrise has left a 12-year-old boy dead.

The Calgary Herald is reporting that a group of boys were skating down a hill this morning, when one lost control and crashed into a post.

CBC Calgary reporter Meghan Grant tweeted that while the young boy had been wearing a helmet, he died of a crushed larnyx.

CTV Calgary reports the boy underwent surgery at the Rockyview Hospital but could not be saved.

According to the Herald, the boy was set to return to school next week at Samuel W. Shaw after summer vacation.

"They're all just finding out now. My daughter was back-to-school shopping when she found out," a parent told the Herald.

"He was my daughter's best guy friend. He's far too young."
