Darrell Krushelnicki: Edmonton Driver Causes Crash, Saves Four Children Crossing Street

Children In Crosswalk Spared By Hummer-Driving Hero
CP

An Edmonton man is earning praise from police after using his car to cause a car accident last Friday that potentially prevented humans from being injured.

According to an Edmonton police press release, Darrell Krushelnicki was in his car exiting the Bonnie Doon Mall parking lot near 83 Street when he noticed a 2007 Pontiac G5 speeding toward an intersection. Witnesses claim the driver was talking on a cell phone while he passed several cars which had stopped to let children use the crosswalk to cross 84 Avenue.

Krushelnicki saw the speeding vehicle and pulled his Hummer into the path of the car speeding toward the children.

"I felt fortunate to be where I was, when I was," Krushelinicki, 46, told police. "It's been a year since the Distracted Driving Legislation was introduced in Alberta, and I think this incident further highlights the importance for all of us to put down our cell phones, or get a hands-free system. This could have been a terrible tragedy."

According to the press release, witnesses told police had it not been for Krushelnicki's actions, all four children could have died.

John Troy Heitzman, 23, has been charged with dangerous driving.
