SYDNEY, N.S. - Former Nova Scotia cabinet minister Cecil Clarke is running for mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Clarke announced his decision to run today at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The 44-year-old politician served as attorney general, justice minister, energy minister and speaker of the legislature.

He stepped down from his Cape Breton North seat in the legislature after 10 years to run federally.

Clarke failed to win a seat in the last federal election for the Conservative party.

The municipal election is Oct. 20.
