A gust of wind blew a large tree over in Clarington this weekend, which killed a man driving his truck on the roadway below.

A news release from Durham Regional Police said the tree came down just after 4 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, a 68-year-old man was driving north on White Road, between Ganaraska Road and Clarington Concession Road 8, when the tree came down.

The falling tree crushed the passenger compartment of the truck and brought it to a halt.

The driver died at the scene, the result of what police called a “freak act of nature.”

The victim was identified as William Stapleton, of Clarington.
