TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,422.71 down 24.15 points):

Belo Sun Mining Corp. (TSX:BSX). Miner. Down 17 cents, or 11.04 per cent, at $1.37 on 9,345,219 shares. The Toronto-based company announced a $50 million bought deal financing late Monday. Proceeds will be used to fund the development of its Volta Grande gold project in Brazil, further exploration and general corporate purposes.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up three cents, or 0.30 per cent, at $9.96 on 7,289,676 shares. The gold sector closed 0.54 per cent higher to 349.08 points, buoyed by a 60 cent US rise on the December bullion contract which closed at $1,771.20 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Denison Mines Corp. (TSX:DML). Miner. Up 27 cents, or 19.15 per cent, at $1.68 on 7,158,942 shares. The company's stock jumped to close at its highest level since May. Denison said in a statement that there were no material undisclosed developments that might account for the increased trading activity.

New Gold Inc. (TSX:NGD). Miner. Up 16 cents, or 1.33 per cent, at $12.17 on 7,040,350 shares.

Progress Energy Resources Corp. (TSX:PRQ). Natural gas. Down three cents, or 0.14 per cent, at $21.91 on 4,529,269 shares. The energy sector fell 1.07 per cent to 267.08 points as price of the October contract fell 92 cents US to $2.773 per barrel.

Orbite Aluminae Inc. (TSX:ORT). Miner. Up 41 cents, or 14.24 per cent, at $3.29 on 4,404,689 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,322.64 up 5.48 points):

ShaMaran Petroleum Corp. (TSXV:SNM). Mining exploration and development. Down half a cent, or 1.05 per cent, at 47 cents on 12,224,685 shares.

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Down eight cents, or 4.17 per cent, at $1.84 on 7,194,478 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

CGI Group (TSX:GIB.A). Information technology. Up 44 cents, or 1.68 per cent, at $26.61 on 747,949 shares. The IT company's Amercian subsidiary was awarded a US$143 million analytical and technical services contract by the U.S. Army to help prepare soldiers at its schools and training centres across the country.

Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G). Miner. Up 32 cents, or 0.71 per cent, at $45.42 on 2,112,922 shares. The big gold miner said after markets closed that it has signed a deal to sell part of its stake in Primero Mining Corp. (TSX:P) in a secondary offering worth $44.2 million. Primero Mining's shares closed seven cents, or 1.29 per cent, at $5.49 on 348,387 shares.

Research In Motion (TSX:RIM). Wireless technology. Up 17 cents, or 2.40 per cent, at $7.24 on 3,899,121 shares. The BlackBerry maker signed a patent licensing agreement with Microsoft Corp. to use the software company's latest file system technology on its smartphones. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
