The death of former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed on Thursday marked for many the passing of a statesman and politician.
Lougheed's leadership began the more than 40-year reign of Conservatives in Alberta after his party toppled the Social Credit party in 1971.
“On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Peter Lougheed," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a statement.
HuffPost readers were also weighing in on the legacy of the Albertan.
"A very rare breed of man.......an honest politician," wrote reader Ansdlmol. "Pity we don't have a few hundred more like him."
Reader Campbell_Hendery wrote that "Peter Lougheed was a good and decent man. He was an example of what Canada is all about I often disagreed with him. But always respected him. We have lost a man who was a politician by vocation. A man with principles but no agenda...
Not all readers saw Lougheed in a positive light, many pointing to his reaction to the National Energy Program, a Liberal policy that was adopted during the energy crisis in the 1970s.
"He stuck it to Canadians with his oppostion to the NEP," wrote artbbcramer. "We will pay for this forever. Don't expect me to cry a tear. He isn't a Canadian hero."
