Cold-case squad arrests man in 1995 homicide

Montreal police say their cold-case unit has cracked a homicide from 17 years ago.

Officers arrested a man Friday evening in relation to a killing in a Plateau bar in 1995, spokesperson Const. Danny Richer said.

Réal Perron, 34, was shot to death on Aug. 30 of that year in the bar at the corner of St. Denis and Roy Streets.

Detectives believe the killing had to do with an unpaid drug debt.

The man arrested Friday, Éric Beauchamps, was a suspect in the case and was arrested in 1996 but released for lack of evidence.

Richer said only that "new information" cold-case investigators got in April from a tip led them to the arrest.

He wouldn't divulge any other details because the investigation is still going on, he said.

Beauchamps, 43, appeared in court Saturday by video-conference to be charged with first-degree murder. He's scheduled to be back in court in October.
