A 48-year-old American man died in a fall early Sunday morning on Mount Royal.

The man, who was walking with friends around 1 a.m., fell from near the lookout on Camillien-Houde Boulevard, the one that faceseast-end Montreal.

Montreal fire department Chief Richard Laporte said the path was dark and the man didn't see the edge. There are several spots along the edge where there isn't a barrier.

He fell about 30 metres along the steep slope, according to a spokesperson for the city's paramedic service, Urgences Santé.

Emergency personnel called to the scene needed 20 minutes just to find him after the fall. They tried but failed to resuscitate him.

The man's name has not been released.
