Montreal police say it is the 23rd homicide of the year.
The man was found by a passerby just before 9:30 p.m. ET in the lot at the Beaurepaire station on the corner of Beaurepaire Drive and Woodland Avenue.
He was rushed to hospital with critical injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital at around 1 a.m. Police later confirmed he died from a gunshot wound.
The man, whose name has not been released, was a member of a street gang, police said.
"What I can tell you is he is a white male, age 29. The man was shot, as I said, at least once. Also that the man is known as a street gang member, and also he's known in the world of drug trafficking," Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursière said.
Investigators cordoned off a large area surrounding the parking lot in order to collect evidence Monday morning. The search included the canine unit.
Montreal police are trying to determine whether the gang in which the victim was purportedly a member is active in the area.
Local resident Suzanna Engel said she thinks gangs do operate in Beaurepaire. Her son was involved in one when he was younger, she said.
"I am involved with youth protection and so many things, and I do believe the mothers and parents have to get together, and be scared," Engel said. "But we have to speak up because our children get killed."
