Blue Jays' Brett Lawrie done with Twitter

A disappointing performance in the second half of the baseball season is forcing Brett Lawrie to change things away from the field of play.

The Toronto Blue Jays third baseman apparently signed off social network Twitter for good on Monday night.

“This shall be my final tweet of all time! Take care twitter,” he wrote on his page.

Further details on Lawrie’s decision weren’t provided.

On June 2, he was credited with alerting hundreds of thousands of people of a shooting at the Eaton Centre mall, one of Toronto’s biggest tourist destinations.

Two people died in the shooting and five others were injured.

Lawrie is one of several Blue Jays to have communicated with fans this season via Twitter on tweeting Tuesdays, a promotion encouraging fans to tweet during games for prizes.

Along with teammates Ricky Romero, J.P. Arencibia and Jose Bautista, he had T-shirts sold by the team with their jersey numbers and Twitter handles on the back.

Lawrie, who had more than 125,000 Twitter followers, was hitless in four at-bats including three strikeouts in the nightcap of Monday’s doubleheader at Baltimore, dropping his batting average for September to .206 and .272 overall this season. The popular player was 1-for-3 in August after hitting at a .267 clip in July.

Lawrie’s average climbed each month to start the season, from .278 in April to .287 in May and .310 in June.
