CALGARY - The chairman of the University of Calgary board of governors is stepping down a month after questions were raised about his expense claims.

Doug Black, who is a senator-elect in Alberta, said in a release Friday that it is time for him to move on.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has been critical of expenses Black claimed during his five years on the board, including executive-class flights and $500-a-night hotel rooms.

Black, a lawyer and president of the Energy Policy Institute of Canada, has repaid some of this expense money.

He was elected for the Progressive Conservatives last April as a Senate nominee in the Alberta provincial election.

The names of Senate nominees are submitted by Alberta to the federal government for consideration whenever the province has a Senate vacancy.
