Sizzling Swiss cheese tops burger to cook on grill or in oven for autumn noshing

Whether you are still grilling outdoors or choosing the oven to cook burgers, this Swiss sizzler will be a winner this autumn.

Swiss Burger

650 g (1 1/3 lb) lean ground beef

50 ml (1/4 cup) cooked bacon bits

15 ml (1 tbsp) horseradish

30 ml (2 tbsp) chopped fresh parsley

1 egg

125 ml (1/2 cup) breadcrumbs

90 to 125 g (3 to 4 oz) Swiss cheese, finely diced

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

4 to 6 whole-wheat burger buns

Garnish

50 ml (1/4 cup) ketchup

30 ml (2 tbsp) barbecue sauce

4 to 6 slices tomato

4 to 6 thin slices red onion

4 to 6 lettuce leaves, washed and patted dry

Heat barbecue to medium-high or oven to 220 C (425 F).

In a mixing bowl, place all ingredients, exept buns and garnish. Season to taste and combine. Divide mixture into 4 to 6 parts and shape into patties.

Place patties on grill or on parchment paper-lined baking sheet on centre rack of oven. Cook burgers for 12 to 15 minutes, turning them over only once.

Heat burger buns.

Mix ketchup and barbecue sauce and spread on burger buns. Garnish patties with tomato, onion slices and lettuce.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Tip: You can also cook the burgers in a skillet over medium-high heat, 5 to 7 minutes per side.
