A municipal police force has been called in to investigate the alleged beating of a man by two RCMP officers in southeast B.C.

Investigators from Delta will be looking into the incident in Creston, B.C., early Saturday morning, where Tom Campen alleges he was set upon by two RCMP officers who’d been called to a bar to deal with a report of a woman causing a disturbance.

Campen, 50, suffered serious facial injuries and a broken rib and has been transferred to hospital in Kelowna for plastic surgery.

"My upper jaw's all wired shut," Campen told CBC News Tuesday.

Campen said he was in Creston's Kokanee Inn when two Mounties were trying to arrest a woman seated next to him. Campen said when he stood up to address the officers, one of them grabbed his fingers and pushed him backward..

Campen said he did not hit the officer.

"No, I never hit him once. I had my hand on his shoulder, trying to get my other hand away from him, because he was purposely bending my fingers back," Campen said.

He said the next thing he remembers is waking up in hospital.

Campen’s daughter, Donna Meszarosi, said witnesses told her both officers used a flashlight or baton and fists on her father in the incident . She said the witnesses said they thought Campen was dead.

"I don't know how they justify it in any way, even if he was doing something bad," Meszarosi said.

Campen was known to police prior to the incident Saturday, but has no convictions, RCMP said.

A Delta police investigative team flew to Creston this morning, said spokesman Const. Ciarnan Feenan.

"They’ll be speaking to witnesses and trying to gather evidence over the course of the next few days and trying to establish what really happened that night," Feenan said.

Feenan said it was not certain how soon an investigative report would be submitted to the RCMP.

None of the claims against the officers has been verified.

Campen is under investigation for obstruction of justice in connection with the incident.
