Two Vancouver men driving souped-up cars were fined for racing eastbound through the Cassiar Tunnel on Highway 1 on Thanksgiving.
RCMP saw three vehicles driving 139 km/h in the posted 70 km/h zone, "jockeying for position and passing regular flow of traffic in the tunnel" at about 1:40 a.m. on Monday, said Sgt. Peter Thiessen in a news release.
Police pulled over two of the cars -- a "performance enhanced" 2008 Infiniti G37 and a 2009 Honda Accord. Their drivers, aged 21 and 22, were given $483 speeding tickets and an immediate 15-day driver's licence suspension. Their cars were impounded for seven days.
Both men had B.C. Class 5 driver's licences, said Thiessen on Wednesday.
Police did not pursue a Scion that was also involved in the incident, due to concerns for public safety.
RCMP in the Lower Mainland impounded a total of 43 vehicles over the Thanksgiving weekend for excessive speeding.
