McGuinty Steps Down: Reader Reaction To Ontario Premier's Bombshell Announcement

Readers of HuffPost Canada were just as surprised as the media and other politicians at Queen's Park upon learning of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty's surprise resignation Monday.

McGuinty's announcement that he had prorogued the legislature and will step down as party leader was made at an emergency meeting of the Liberal caucus after his government faced a second contempt motion over two cancelled power plants.

In the early hours of the bombshell announcement, readers speculated on what drove the Premier from office, and where he might land, with some wondering if was he planning to run for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party.

Some readers had positive things to say about McGuinty's legacy after 16 years as leader of the provincial party, citing his record on the environment and education. Others were less generous.

"He cancelled the power plants to win the election and it bit him in the tuchus," wrote reader Awetitu, citing the contentious plants in Oakville and Mississauga. "No good deed goes unpunished."
