Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield has suffered a heart attack.

"Thanks to prompt medical attention I am now in stable condition and awaiting bypass surgery. While I am assured of a full and complete recovery, my doctors have advised me that I will require several weeks of rest and recuperation," said Ashfield in a statement.

Ashfield, 60, is the MP for the Fredericton riding in New Brunswick. He was appointed fisheries minister in 2011.

Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, will take over the fisheries portfolio while Ashfield recovers, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Wednesday. Ashfield recommended Shea himself and she will continue to serve as national revenue minister.

"While I am focused on my recovery, I look forward to returning to Ottawa and getting back to work," said Ashfield.

"I would like to wish Minister Keith Ashfield a quick recovery to full health and look forward to welcoming him back to Ottawa," said Harper. "Minister Shea's previous experience in the Fisheries portfolio will serve her well as she continues the work underway at the department."
