Sexting Extortion: Toronto Boy Charged For Allegedly Trying To Extort Girl

TORONTO - Police say a Toronto teen is facing charges for allegedly trying to extort a girl using photos she sent him online.

Investigators say the teen girl began an online relationship with the boy, during which she sent him intimate photos of herself.

Police allege the boy then used the photos in an attempt to manipulate and coerce the girl into sending him a video of herself.

When she refused, police say the boy gained access to the girl's email account and sent the photos to several of her email contacts.

The boy is charged with making, possession and distribution of child pornography, extortion, and threatening death.

The name of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Investigators say they case highlights the dangers of "sexting" and urge anyone with information regarding online sexual exploitation of children to contact police.

aww a criminal youth means the little creep will walk away scot free. Our youth justice system is falsely named there is no justice for anyone against a young offender. I hope at least the little stinker had his phone removed. Also what is with these stupid girls sending pictures like that. Parents time to smarten up and teach your kids/girls the dangers of such stupid behaviour.

The vast majority of children that are punished through Canada's youth justice system live to regret their actions. They undergo rehabilitative programs, get evaluations from psychologists and undergo therapy, some stay in youth detention centres - it's gruelling, there's lots of follow-up from the courts, and it's expensive for parents. It's not the vacation people make it out to be, and it certainly doesn't "get them off scot free".

What's important to remember is that the teenage brain is still in a phase of growth and development, in which the ability to evaluate future consequences from present actions is still maturing. It gives many teenagers a sense of invulnerability, brought about not only due to brain chemistry, but also inexperience and naïveté. This is why we don't let them vote, or join the military, or own firearms - they aren't mature enough yet.

So when some little boy decides to do something grossly immoral and illegal like try to extort someone, hack their private email and send out nude pictures, there's no doubt that the courts need to deal with him.

But the system also makes sure that, 10 or 15 years after the incident happened, the offender won't have a problem getting a university education or gainful employment because of a criminal record for something that happened while he was still a dumb teenager, in a phase he's now grown out of.

Both kids are clearly at fault here, to some degree.

You can't give some random stranger your bank card PIN number and then be shocked when they steal your money. Both situations are the result of someone very naive being taken advantage of by someone with low morals.

Blaming this girl is exactly what has gone wrong with society. Actually, women have alway been held to a different standard when it comes to sex. The only difference now that we have the Internet and your life can be changed in as long as it takes to hit "send". She made a mistake. She is not culpable in this crime. At all.

I'll agree that the wrongs of the boy are infinitely worse than the girl, they're both still responsible *to some degree* - like you said, they both made different mistakes.

So it's all her fault that he tried to extort her and hacked into her e-mail account?

He may have still hacked her account if she hadn't sent him pictures. Sending pictures is hardly an invitation to hack, although some people believe wearing certain clothes are an invitation to sexual assault so I guess there's no reasoning with some people. How about we blame the only one who broke the law?

Is it just me, or does anybody else think the youth "justice" system needs a little nip and tuck? 30 years ago, maybe a 14 year old had some sort of innocence and didn't "understand the ramifications of his/her actions. In 2012, age of the internet, 14 year olds are more savvy that I was at 25. This whole business of protecting the identities and delivering watered down consequences needs to be re-examined. I don't believe most of these kids are nearly as innocent as the youth justice system wants us to believe. Give them latitude once, ok fair enough. Commit repeat offenses... violent acts... after the age of 14... you slide into a new level of visibility and accountability in my book.

I would definitely get on board with a revamp of the system. It needs to have evolved along with crime and technology, but it's rather lacking at the moment.

Yeah cell phones pretty much have no way to be locked down. Especially smartphones. There's no way to limit picture messaging, monitor pictures taken, lock out certain apps, monitor your kid's E-Mail, track the phone, track IM conversations, or anything of the sort.

It's invariably boys/men who do the coercing and girls who do the disrobing. It is critical that these coercers be aware they will be criminalised for such activities. How is this different from taking the photos themselves and then trafficking them as child porn, or adult illegal porn? This is a dark hole in the www and it needs to be plugged.

Funny that the article above this was about how girls are the biggest bullies in school. Obviously this extortion action is illegal, but "sexting" laws need to be changed because 14 year olds will sext, and sending them to jail for child porn charges seems ridiculous. This boy should face some charges for sure, for distribution, but this whole thing is a fine line.

Sending someone for using child porn of said child to extort them is criminal and cruel. There is no fine line; the one doing the sexting may be naive, but it takes a certain level of maliciousness to do what this guy did.

When will these young girls learn not to do this. This type of thing is happening way to often. Glad this young girl is getting the support of the police. If this child was old enough to do this then he is old enough to be named. Hope he gets the punishment fit for the age and crime. I do not know if councelling would help but maybe try that too. The young girl was stupid for doing it in the first place,but at least went to adults when he wanted to exploit her.

He was charged with child porn because he distributed it to others.He also threatened her with death and a bunch of other things if she did not make a video of herself. At least she was smart enough not to do that.

Because she wasn't the one distributing it to others. it was a gift, and it only involved herself. There is a HUGE difference.

I'm glad that there were consequences for the boy. But girls need to stop doing stupid stuff like this in order for attention or whatever. Parents need to teach girls to value their bodies more, which is hard since we live in a world where the media overly sexualizes young girls all the time. If the boy and girl are too young to be named in articles like theses, then they're too young to be doing things like this.

If 16-17 year olds are having sex (pretty common), then sexting is even more common and likely happens much younger than that. You can't stop teens from sexualizing themselves. The crazy thing is that any picture that goes on the web will never come down, but somehow the young offenders act needs to be fixed so that sexting isn't a criminal offense (assuming both parties are under 18).

I don't know why parents are handing their kids a $1200/per year device that *will* cause them trouble. I have no clue why this became the norm. Bottom line, I do not envy the kids growing up these days what with the pressures of being "accecpted".

It's only the norm because as a society we're starting to think it's okay. I don't really understand why young kids need cellphones either. I didn't get my first phone until a year after high school and even then I hardly used the thing.

You're kidding, right? That's what newspapers do, inform the public what's going on in the world and unfortunately there are criminals in the world. It's not bullying, they're trying to state facts. How have they shamed him? They didn't mention his name, because obviously he is a minor and he did something despicable by sending her photos out to other people. He had no right to do that? Especially with the events of last week and Amanda Todd. People like him, that try to blackmail others using personal photos of them in states of undress, should be named out, as a warning to others, that no, you can't get away with this sort of behaviour.

But I hope he doesn't stay there too long. Teenagers make mistakes, and ruining this kid's life by labeling him as a sex offender is not the right decision. We have new technology and we need new laws to help, because teen girls (and boys) will take pics of themselves and now they are around FOREVER. It's a tough legal situation.

Well...good the girl is getting police support. Hope the punishment for the boy is severe enough (and age appropriate), with hefty doses of counselling, so that he'll never do it again, and learn to treat girls and women with respect.
