Dominic Mallette of the Canada Border Services Agency said ketamine crystals were heading from India to Ontario when they were discovered Sept. 14. He said officials were searching a container at the Port of Halifax when they found the drugs.
"We were doing a physical examination, on the bags of rice, during which we found a number of crystals in the bags of rice," said Mallette.
Ketamine is a drug that can be in a liquid, powder or crystal form. People who are given the drug can become unresponsive and unable resist a sexual assault.
"Approximately 25 officers worked for approximately two days to separate all of the ketamine from the bags," he said.
The CBSA worked with the RCMP on the case. So far, one person in Ontario has been charged.
Mallette said this is the second time they've found ketamine at the port. In 2005, he said they found 500 kg of ketamine.Suggest a correction
