It takes a long time for bread dough to rise, but the actual amount of time spent by the cook is relatively short. And there is a world of bread to choose from.

Classic bread: Includes white bread, sourdough, french bread, rye bread.

Buns: Includes bagels, hamburger buns, cinnamon buns, dinner rolls.

Savoury bread: Usually categorized as anything that is not sweet; often flavoured with fragrant herbs, exotic oils or cheeses.

Quick bread: Uses baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent instead of yeast; includes scones, biscuits and all types of fruit- or vegetable-based loaves.

High-fibre bread: Includes whole-grain and whole-wheat breads.

Flat bread: Favourites in the Middle East and Mediterranean; includes pizza dough, crackers, naan, pita, focaccia, chapatti and puri breads.

Dessert bread: High sugar content, often flavoured with fruit.
