Const. Gary O'Brien said police launched the investigation after the player's father complained his son was seriously injured during a Sept. 23 game between the Nanaimo Bantam A boys team and a visiting team from Saanich at the Frank Crane Arena.
O'Brien said Monday police are trying to determine how the boy was injured.
"There was a body check thrown and there's also an allegation that the stick was used in a spearing manner," he said Monday. "We don't know what caused the injury — whether it's the stick or the check."
O'Brien said the injured player's father called police a couple of days ago and that Mounties have spoken with referees, league officials, players and coaches on both sides but the incident isn't any clearer.
Police want anyone who may have witnessed what happened or videotaped the game to call them.
