LONDON, Ont. - A London councillor says she plans to bring forward a motion calling on the city's mayor to step aside while police investigate misspending allegations.
Coun. Nancy Branscombe says Mayor Joe Fontana should vacate his position until the completion of an RCMP probe into allegations the former cabinet minister used federal government money in 2005 to pay for his son's wedding reception.
Branscombe contends the allegations are distracting Fontana from his duties as mayor and that he should temporarily step down until the investigation is finished.
Fontana has denied the allegations and told reporters Monday night that he isn't leaving the mayor's chair.
The motion is symbolic since council doesn't have the power to remove a mayor for any reason.
Tuesday night's council meeting will be the first since the allegations arose two weeks ago.
