Christopher Lewis Ray has been identified as the victim of a fatal East Vancouver police shooting that has drawn the attention of B.C.'s new police watchdog.

Ray, 52, was seen in the 400-block of Skeena Street breaking windows near a McDonald's restaurant at Hastings Street and Cassiar before police arrived at the scene, the B.C. Coroners Service said in a news release. Ray, who was reportedly carrying a knife, was shot at the scene and died in hospital.

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office is investigating the police shooting, one of two incidents under review Monday. Earlier in the day, the police watchdog was called to investigate a car crash in Langley after police attempted to stop a vehicle.
