SURREY, B.C. - Extra police, security and attendants are working at SkyTrain stations in the Metro Vancouver area after RCMP detonated a bomb found on the elevated tracks.

Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said about a dozen detectives will also be out Saturday as they investigate how the explosive device could have ended up on the tracks between two stations in Surrey, B.C.

She said a passenger on the train spotted three canisters strapped together with tape on Friday afternoon and alerted a station attendant.

The explosive device was attached to canisters that were the size of fire extinguishers and could have been thrown onto the guideway or it's possible someone climbed up to the area, Drennan said.

"We have officers going through all of the video from all of the stations in what we think might be a reasonable time frame to see if there's anybody that looks like they're carrying a suspicious package of this size.

"Our Number 1 concern is public safety and reassuring the public that this is a safe system."

Explosives technicians believe the object would not have detonated on its own but may have been electronically or manually set off, Drennan said.

"They do say it was somewhat of an unsophisticated device, but it was dangerous.

"Last night, we conducted a sweep of the entire transit system, which includes trains, buses, all stations, platforms, bus loops, and the SeaBus."

The incident disrupted service on the SkyTrain system between the Scott Road and Gateway stations for about three hours.
