ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Fraser Valley criminology Prof. Darryl Plecas is taking a run at politics.

Plecas, a long-time resident of Abbotsford, B.C., and professor at the University of the Fraser Valley for the last 33 years, plans to seek the Liberal nomination in the Abbotsford-South riding.

That's the constituency held by former Liberal, then Conservative, now-Independent MLA, John van Dongen.

Plecas says he believes Premier Christy Clark can fend off the economic problems plaguing much of the globe, and lead the province to prosperity and success.

If Plecas wins the nomination, he will face van Dongen — who captured the riding for the Liberals with nearly 59 per cent of the vote in the last election — and NDP candidate Lakhvinder Jhaj.

A date for the Liberal nomination meeting has not been set.
