According to CTV Calgary, police responded to intrusion alarms just before 4 a.m. Monday morning after a vehicle backed through the north pedestrian entrance.

The thieves broke through the security gates on retailer Jewels By Maxime's, taking a siginificant amount of merchandise.

660 News reports the thieves drove the van 30 metres into the mall and left a lot of damage in their wake, including hanging light fixtures and broken glass.

"Our investigators in two district are working on other elements of the investigation, like reviewing CCTV. So we hope to have some suspect description at some point later in the day," Duty Insp. Darren Leggat told CBC Calgary.

"On occasion these events happen, at smaller stand-alone retail outlets. But something of this nature is quite rare," Leggat said.

Paige O'Neill, the general manager of Market Mall, told CBC Calgary only the entranceway was damaged.

"We do have people on site, plus a security vehicle that rotates around the lot. So basically once everything was heard, 911 was called," O'Neill said.

Police are searching for a stolen white Dodge Journey SUV, likely damaged from backing into the mall.
