EDMONTON - A major car rental company has been found in violation of Alberta's privacy laws by making photocopies of its customers driver's licenses

A privacy adjudicator ruled that Budget Rent-a-Car failed to prove it kept the copies safe, and that it failed to show a need for the photocopies in the first place.

Alberta Human Services Minister Manmeet Bhullar says the decision sets an important precedent for protection of personal information.

Bhullar says companies have an obligation to protect personal information from identity theft.

He says he doesn't know exactly how many rental companies copy driver's licenses, saying some do, some don't.
