The measure aims to prevent governments from choosing the timing of elections based on their chances of winning.
“It’s nothing revolutionary,” said Bernard Drainville, the minister for democratic institutions.
Drainville said the adoption of the Bill would make the election process more economical and fair, as well as less vulnerable to partisan interests.
Under Bill 3 the next provincial election would be on Sept. 26, 2016
The following elections would occur on the last Monday of the month of September every four years.
The amendments to the Election Act would also give the Chief Electoral Officer the right to postpone the election to the following Monday if, for instance, it coincides with another election.
