Woman dies from Scarborough fire injuries

A 56-year-old grandmother has died a day after a fire ripped through her home in Scarborough, where five other family members were also caught inside.

Toronto firefighters were called to a home on Canlish Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning to fight the two-alarm fire.

Five people were taken to hospital, including Chandraleela Sivapatham.

Sivapatham was in critical condition after arriving in hospital and was later put on life support. She died on Wednesday afternoon.

Her husband, Muthucumaru Sivapatham, remains in critical condition in hospital

Family members are now looking into funeral arrangements for Chandraleela Sivapatham. They told CBC News in a telephone interview that the loss is extremely tough for them.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is believed to have started in the carport.

Fire officials are trying to determine the cause.
