NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. - An armed standoff at a Metro Vancouver casino has ended with the gunman being shot by police and taken to hospital.

The man suffered a serious injury according to the Independent Investigations Office, which has taken over the investigation into the shooting.

The standoff outside the Starlight Casino on Lulu Island in New Westminster began early Thursday morning when a man with a gun was spotted in the casino parking lot.

Patrons of the casino were ordered to remain in the building while police cordoned off the area and tried to negotiate with the man before he was shot.

During the standoff, police also closed the busy Queensborough Bridge between New Westminster and the island, spawning massive traffic jams as commuters were forced to detour to other routes.

Nine investigators from the IIO have been called in to investigate the shooting.
