An Edmonton woman is suing Air Canada after a cup of hot water tipped off her tray, spilling water onto her lap and burning her.

Rema Halabi, 35, alleges a stewardess is to blame after she was burned severely on a 2010 flight to San Francisco. According to the Edmonton Journal, the $206,000 lawsuit claims the stewardess failed to ensure the water was not too hot, did not put a lid on the cup and did not make sure the cup was safely placed on the tray.

According to the Calgary Sun, the passenger in front of Halabi reclined their seat, jarring the tray and sending the hot water into her lap.

Halabi says she suffered second-degree burns all over her pubic area, lap and knees and that she now suffers from scarring, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and panic attacks. She also claims that she has been compromised in her duties as a massage therapist and that her income has been, and will continue to be, affected.

The Sun reports Halabi claims she was in good health at the time of the accident, but that is not the case anymore. She says she cannot enjoy an active lifestyle and has a hard time forming intimate relationships.

A statement of defence has not yet been filed.

Statements of claim and statements of defence contain allegations which have not been proven in court.
