Tofino Mayor Perry Schmunk announced his resignation during a council meeting Tuesday, which came as no surprise to his colleagues.

Schmunk said he had been transparent with scheduling issues that came up after he accepted a job as marketing director with Vancouver-based Cactus Club Cafe Restaurants Ltd. in August.

"I went to council at the time to say my situation is changing," Schmunk told The Huffington Post B.C. Wednesday. Tofino council decided to give Schmunk's new situation a try for a couple months anyways.

Problems began after his new schedule took him out of town multiple times a week and challenged his ability to regularly attend council's Tuesday meetings.

Schmunk said he went to council again to decide if either "the best course of action is we change the meeting time or we look at the other options." The decision was made to accept Schmunk's resignation.

"It was with a heavy heart," Schmunk said of his decision to step down. "I really enjoyed serving the community."

Schmunk's last day in office will be Jan. 1, 2013.
