FREDERICTON - The Opposition Liberals in New Brunswick want to know why the public safety minister waited almost a month before letting the public know about the mistaken early release of a prisoner.

Public safety critic Rick Doucet says the prisoner was released in mid-October, but a statement from Robert Trevors didn't come out until late last week.

Doucet says the minister must tell the public what he knows about the release and when he first learned about it.

The provincial government has launched an internal review of the case.

Trevors issued a statement Friday saying the inmate was released Oct. 15 from the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre.

The inmate was arrested by Saint John police on an unrelated matter Nov. 4.
