UPDATE: The BC Coroners Service has identified Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, of Richmond as the man shot after the lengthy standoff with police.

A man who was shot by police outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster, B.C. earlier this month has died in hospital.

The man, who has not been named, began a standoff on Nov. 8 in the casino parking lot. He sat in a car, armed with a gun, for several hours. The incident ended when he was shot by police.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but died in hospital on Sunday night, said a news release Monday from the the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

The agency is responsible for investigating deaths or serious injury involving police in B.C. Its probe into this case continues.
