Opposition Liberals in New Brunswick call for ban on tanning bed use for youth

FREDERICTON - The Opposition Liberals in New Brunswick are calling on the provincial government to ban the use of tanning beds by those under 19.

Health critic Donald Arsenault says the Liberals will table a bill aimed at banning the practice, but opposition bills are rarely made law.

That's why Arsenault is urging Health Minister Ted Flemming to take the initiative.

Arsenault says a ban could save lives but health-care dollars.

Citing research from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Arsenault says the risk of skin cancer increases by 75 per cent when tanning bed use begins prior to age 35.
