I am actually proud of Canada, no black Friday here, we keep in the bank or a mattress.
Hope it will never catch on, it is good to be different.

There will no doubt be a host of commenters who will denigrate Buy Nothing Day. Their comments will very likely take on the character of good religious folk confronting some apostate. However, consumption is not a religion, and the societal pressure to consume for its own sake is something that needs to be addressed -- and resisted. What better time to demonstrate one's individual free will in the face of these pressures than on Black Friday? Why not ask yourself why, in our affluent society, we expected to respond to the call to consume as if to a starter's pistol, reenacting scenes from Mad Max, fighting for a last bread crumb? It's just stuff, and most of it is worthless garbage that we are brainwashed into thinking we need. In the meantime, the choices we make are shaping our future, perhaps into something that really is like a scene from Mad Max, or worse. Here's wishing you a happy Buy Nothing Day!
