WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government has tabled a bill proposing lengthy job leaves for parents with very sick kids.

The proposed legislation would give working parents up to 37 weeks off to care for a critically ill child.

Parents of young crime victims would also be eligible for a long leave.

It could be up to one year if a child disappeared as a result of a crime and as long as two years if a child died as a result of criminal violence.

The proposed amendments to Manitoba's Employment Standards Code are meant to complement new federal income support benefits.

The benefits for parents are to become available next year.
