N.S. girl's fundraiser brings in $25K for wheelchair

A fundraiser Saturday night brought in more than $25,000 for a Lower Sackville, N.S., child who needs to get a wheelchair.

Four-year-old Payton Given currently gets around her house by crawling on her belly because she has spastic cerebral palsy. Her father Brad is caring for her, her two triplet sisters and another daughter.

His wife, Amy, died recently from a rare blood disorder.

A website for Payton has raised almost $75,000 and the Department of Community Services has also promised to help the child get a wheelchair.

The fundraiser at a bowling alley brought in more money. Given said it will help him get Payton two wheelchairs: one power and one manual. He will also be able to retrofit the family van to accommodate the wheelchairs. Any extra money will go toward retrofitting the family home to accommodate Payton in her chair.

"I can't believe the generosity of people outside, that don't even know my family — overwhelmed," he said.
