The full brunt of Justin Trudeau’s impact on Canada probably won’t be felt for some years yet. But his entry into the federal Liberal leadership race has already had one tangible consequence: it has cost the country Mark Carney, who is leaving his job as Governor of the Bank of Canada to head up the Bank of England.

Over the summer, Mr. Carney weighed his options on whether to plunge into politics and resolved against it only after Mr. Trudeau declared his candidacy. Had he opted in, he wouldn’t even have been in the running for the Bank of England job.
