FREDERICTON - The lone Independent member of the New Brunswick legislature missed today's throne speech because he had heart surgery.

Dr. Jim Parrott underwent quadruple bypass surgery at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Health Minister Hugh Flemming said he was asked by Parrott's wife to inform members of the legislature.

Flemming said Parrott had completed his surgery but couldn't comment further on his condition.

Parrott was elected in 2010 as the Tory member for the riding of Fundy-River Valley, but was ejected from the party's caucus in September.

The former heart surgeon clashed with the government over health care, accusing it of not listening to doctors, and now sits as an Independent.
