The race to find the next Liberal leader heated up on Wednesday with Marc Garneau's entry into the fray. The MP for the riding of Westmount-Ville-Marie made his bid official in Montreal in a speech peppered with jabs at Stephen Harper's Conservatives but also with jokes about his past as an astronaut.

Twitter was quick to capitalize on these space and sci-fi references with the hashtag #GarneauSlogans. Many of the tweets speak to Garneau's stint as the payload specialist aboard the Challenger shuttle, a mission which made the first Canadian in space.

Other tweets express hope for what Garneau might be able to accomplish are leader, suggesting he'll be the one to replace F-35 fighter jets with Millennium Falcons, foster missions to secure Martian sovereignty and add phasers to the now-dead gun registry.

Whether Canadians will get to see Garneau do these things remains to be seen as he faces competition from a number of candidates, such as fellow Montreal MP, Justin Trudeau. And while polls suggest Trudeau's popularity is gaining steam many Twitter users point out that when it comes to experience (space-related or otherwise), Garneau may have Trudeau beat.

The 63-year-old MP has also served with the Canadian Naval Forces, though as @Matthewcreid on Twitter jokes, it's Garneau's history in space that will apple to the niche Liberal-Star-Trek-voter demographic.
