Police were called to an apartment above a store front at 2889 Keele St., just north of Wilson, at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Inside they found Carpio suffering from gunshot wounds to the body.
Police say there were six to 10 patrons inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. All fled when police arrived.
Most of the patrons were from Toronto's Spanish community, according to police. Police are asking anyone who was in the apartment around the time of the shooting to contact them.
One neighbor told CBC News that the man who lived in the apartment was a new immigrant to Canada, possibly from the Dominican Republic.
So far, no suspects are in custody.
