CHARLOTTETOWN - The Prince Edward Island government says a new phone system and website that gives access to up-to-date road conditions will be up and running in the new year.

Transportation Minister Robert Vessey says a website that offers conditions of the province’s highways will be active this month, while the 511 phone service will be available in early 2013.

The province says motorists can select a particular highway or portions of a highway to find out whether the road is clear, slushy, icy or snow-covered.

The system will also provide travel information for the Confederation Bridge, road closures and current weather conditions.

In the summer, the service will provide information on construction work taking place on highways.
