The following stations would each lose a truck in the coming year, according to a staff briefing note recommending the cuts:
- 1549 Albion Road (near Finch Avenue West).
- 5318 Lawrence Avenue East (near Centennial Road).
- 840 Gerrard Street East (near Carlaw Avenue).
- 7 Lapsley Road (near Sheppard Avenue East and Neilson Road).
A station at 462 Runnymede Road near Annette Street would also have its truck taken away, a move that "represents the closure of the fire station."
The briefing note says the closure of the station has been recommended in several studies over the years, starting in 1987.
Fire services also recommends cutting 104 jobs, all through attrition. The service currently employs just under 3,200 people.
"Several options were reviewed by management to determine potential reductions that did not impact staffing, however, with salaries and benefits making up 92 per cent of actual spending, it is impossible to achieve the required savings without staff reductions," said the briefing note.
The planned cuts by fire services are a direct result of the directive by Mayor Rob Ford and his budget chief, Coun. Mike Del Grande, for all city departments to freeze spending.
