Newfoundland justice minister says circuit court consolidation will move ahead

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador Justice Minister Darin King says circuit courts in the province are being consolidated.

The courts in Harbour Breton, Conne River, Springdale and Burgeo are slated for closure in 2013.

They currently deal with everything from criminal law to highway traffic offences and small claims.

Liberal critic Andrew Parsons raised the issue in the House of Assembly on Wednesday.

He says restricting access to court services is restricting access to justice and he called on the government to maintain the service.

But King says the decision was made following a thorough review which looked at the deployment of resources.
